Have a young tree in the ground about 3 years. 6 feet when transplanted from ball. Grown maybe a foot. Very sparse leafing, particularly at lower branches. Has developed a splitting of the outer bark, exposing the core. Wondering if I should give up on this tree as it appears in major trouble. Thoughts?

Expert Response
It is not in very good shape. I doubt it will be a healthy tree because it has serious cracks and what look to be cankers. Young trees should not be showing so many bark problems if they are to thrive. That it is not leafing out as it should is also an indicator or poor health. It is probably suffering from gummosis.
