Sugar Maple tree #290064

Asked November 12, 2015, 6:32 PM EST

We have a 55 year old sugar Maple tree, recently with strong winds a large branch broke from the middle of the tree. The tree has buds on it but when the tree trimmer came to remove the branch and trim the broken limb, we noticed that the new part he trimmed from the center of the tree looked like it had worm holes. (See third photo attached). Do you think this tree is o.k., can it be treated, or should it be removed?

Hello. I have just received a reminder that your question needs an answer. My apologies if you have not heard from me--I did send a reply days ago. If this tree is important to you and you want to save it please have it evaluated by a certified tree arborist in your area. You can find one at this website: http://www.treesaregood.org. Since your tree lost a major limb and it shows symptoms of an insect presence (perhaps borer larvae) you are right in being concerned about the structural integrity of the tree.
