Persimmon tree, fruit with black spots #289712

Asked November 10, 2015, 3:30 PM EST

I have a persimmon tree in the front yard. The tip of the fruit is black and almost looks scratched. The inside of the fruit has black threads throughout and the tip is darker. The tip is also ripening faster than the rest of the fruit. Is there something wrong? An infestation? Or rotting? I know persimmons should be eaten very ripe but I'm not sure if we should wait for these. Are they edible? Thanks.

Expert Response

Hi, Persimmons can undergo bletting, which is another stage of ripening that occurs after the peak orange coloration. After bletting the fruit can get much darker. However, on Fuyu the sun makes black smudges and I'm wondering if these perhaps got a little bit too much sun. Did the tree itself look normal, or did you notice anything unusual on the leaves?
