Hi- I just noticed this fungus at the base of Mathilda, my large white oak. Please tell me that this is not something "fatal". My hand is 8 inches across. I have attached 2 photos. I live in Baltimore City. Sincerely,
County Maryland

From your photos it looks like it may be a fungus decaying in the mulch around the tree trunk. As long as the fungus is in the mulch it is ok. The mulch may have wood in it causing it to breakdown.
If this is not what you are noticing, or the fungus is on the trunk, you can send additional photos. You can also contact several certified arborists for an onsite diagnosis regarding the health of your tree http://www.treesaregood.org/

There is no mulch around the base of the tree other than leaves. Perhaps I should send a closer photo? I am concerned that this might be amarillia.
Our pathologist looked at your photos, and does not think this is armillaria. It does not look like it is growing on the tree at all but in the natural debris beneath it, which would be normal.
