Are these Chanterelles? #288251

Asked November 01, 2015, 5:28 PM EST

We love to eat and forage for our own food, particularly mushrooms. We're still pretty new to the mushroom world and know that there are look a likes that could potentially kill you or at the very least have a bed stomach ache. Could you please tell me if these are true Chanterelles and not say jack-o-lanterns or one of the other impostor.

Expert Response

Those mushrooms are not chantrelles. Chantrelles have decurrent "pseudo" gills (some also refer to them as ridges), yellow to cream spore prints, a bare stipe, and are mycorrhizal with certain tree species.

To learn more about chantrelles and possible look-a-likes, you might want to pick up a copy of David Arora's, "Mushrooms Demystified." Mushroomexpert.com also has several comprehensive keys that are useful for mushroom identification:

Thank you very much. I know that we love chantrelles and we have found them on our property before they grow by the trees just where the field opens up but these ones grew on a part of our property we had never looked on before and I always double check. Plus I figured it was a great opportunity to try out this app and let other people in on what is and what isn't proper Chanterelles. I appreciate the help as well as the referrals.
