Slit-like openings in bark of Texas Ash #285656

Asked October 19, 2015, 12:45 PM EDT

Any idea what the problem is with this tree? There are about 15 slit-like openings in the bark of this 7 ft. tall Texas Ash. It's a new tree and I'm debating whether to have our lawn guy return it. Thank you!

Tim:

Thank you for your inquiry and I particularly thank you for the very good photos showing the splits in the tree.

This type of splitting is usually from extreme temperature changes in the winter, but it can be from vigorous growth.  Generally it is not fatal, but the opening can allow disease and if you have the option to return the tree, that is what I would do if it were mine.

Thank you,
