This plant looks generally pretty healthy to me. I'm not sure why you are trimming it at all. I would suggest first of all that you leave it alone and let it "do its own thing." Especially at this time of the year, when the plant naturally undergoes a mild dormancy.
Some of the trimmed shoots have buds on them. I would expect those buds to sprout when the plant resumes growth in the spring.
