Arborvitae Inner Browning #283171

Asked October 07, 2015, 3:04 PM EDT

This arborvitae was planted in May and has been thriving. Recently, I noticed it was browning (photos attached) and there were brown nodules on the upper one-third of the tree. A second arborvitae, planted at the same time (about 20 feet away) has not been affected. I will appreciate your advice on how to deal with this condition. Thank you!

Expert Response

This tree is probably still thriving.  These growths are the seed pods - or cones of the Thuja, or Arborvitae tree.  These small cones can provide good winter food for birds.
