what is this plant? #282764

Asked October 05, 2015, 4:25 PM EDT

We were traveling in eastern Oregon and saw this plant growing along side the roads. It is past blooming, as this appears to be the seed pods... it is a vine that was growing up into trees, across bushes, and along fence wire. It was very thick in some areas. I had never seen this before... is it invasive?

Grant County Oregon

The plant is Clematis ligusticifolia - western clematis or virgins-bower - in the Ranunculaceae (Buttercup Family). It is a native perennial vine found from BC to CA east to the Dakotas and New Mexico. It is very common in eastern Oregon.
