Is my Venus Fly Trap Dead or Dormant? #281859

Asked September 30, 2015, 11:33 PM EDT

I am trying to get a professional opinion on whether my Venus Fly Trap is simply dormant, or is in fact dead. The leaves have turned mostly black and brittle, and there appears to be some white mold at the base of the leaves. I'm not sure what species of Venus Fly Trap I have. Thank you very much for your help.

Expert Response

It appears that your Venus fly trap is in very severe stress.  You could gently lift the plant out of the pot and examine the roots.  If there are still viable roots, try re-potting the viable portions of the plant.  Be sure to use rainwater or distilled water when watering the plant.  It is highly sensitive to any chemicals in the water.
It is our observation that Venus fly traps are difficult to maintain in an indoor environment.
