What type of fig is this? Are all figs edible?

Your image shows an edible fig, Ficus carica. All edible figs grown in this country produce similar fleshy fruits, some tending toward brown skin while others remain green. The fruits are ready to be harvested when they soften and droop while still on the tree. Many different kinds exist. (See http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/2plants.htm#ficus)
Ornamental fig species such as Ficus benjamina and F. lyrata (rubber tree) also set fruit but those remain firm and are not eaten.
