Is pruning of a rose bush... #277472

Asked September 11, 2015, 3:05 PM EDT

Is pruning of a rose bush recommended prior to getting it ready for the winter? If not, should you trim back some of the taller growth? I have a year old climbing rose that is over 3ft tall.

Expert Response

Pruning stimulates growth, so it is best not to do that now as new growth is unlikely to harden off in time for winter. It is best to wait until late winter/early spring to prune. But if you need to protect the canes and they won't fit under the protection, or if you feel the canes are long enough to be whipped around in the wind and damaged, then wait until the leaves fall to cut them back to fit.
