I want to plant a 7 foot spruce. Is September/October  an OK time?

Expert Response

Hello,

thank you for your question.
Spring time is a preferred time to plant any trees in Colorado to give trees and shrubs enough time to grow their roots before our harsh winters set in.
If you decide to plant your spruce this fall its important to do it as long as the ground is not frozen yet before you plant. Make sure you keep an eye on the tree throughout the winter since it will need watering during dry spells. Evergreens don't "hibernate" like our deciduous/leaf trees, they will loose moisture from their needles throughout the winter.
