sheep minerals #277026

Asked September 10, 2015, 1:04 AM EDT

I am trying to start a grass-fed sheep venture for my hobby farm. I noticed several different salt/mineral blocks at the farm store. Should I be giving them a block with copper or will they be likely to get enough in this area? I'm in Polk County, but near the border of Yamhill County.

Polk County Oregon

Expert Response

Shep minerals normally do not include copper as it can be toxic in small amounts.  Sheep are very sensitive to copper.  While they require some in the diet, a specific sheep mineral will contain very little or no copper.

Loose mineral is preferred for sheep.  A palatable loose mineral made specifically for sheep is the best choice.  Watch calcium and phosphorus content as well as the ratio.  The ratio of calcium to phosphorus should not exceed 2 to 1.
