Rutland County Vermont
Scion wood for grafting is best collected while still dormant but after the coldest part of winter has passed. Wood for spring grafting is often harvested in late February through March, but any sign of tree growth indicates that it is too late to collect. Grafting may be done at various times depending on the type of grafts you will make. Cleft grafts are typically done in the orchard whenever the weather is comfortable enough to work without gloves, often from March through April. Whip and tongue grafting is generally done indoors any time in winter and the resulting grafts held in cool storage until planting out in spring.
