Help identifying a sapling - crepe myrtle? #275367

Found this growing in the garden under some tall phlox, and a few yards away from a crepe myrtle. First I thought it was a baby phlox shoot, but the leaves seem too pointy. Sure looks like the crepe myrtle. Could it be? It's only a few inches high right now.
