Grapes #272556

Asked August 24, 2015, 12:48 PM EDT

Hello. A couple weeks ago I bought a house that has two large grape vines in the back yard. I am noticing them starting to ripen and turn purple in color! Wondering if you could help me determine what kind of grapes they are, when the best time to pick them is, and how to care for them. I have a friend who saw them and would like to plant some of her own. Is there anyway she can take from my vines next year or would she has to start from scratch. Thanks for your help!

You appear to have a nice crop of grapes! I can't help you with the variety, but you can do some research into hardy grape varieties and see if you can narrow it down based on size, flavor, acidity, and time of ripening. Your friend can take cuttings and propagate the grape vine indoors. Here is an Extension publication that will help you with both of these issues as well as caring for your plants: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/fruit/growing-grapes-for-home-use/
