plant dropping leaves #272544

Asked August 24, 2015, 12:24 PM EDT

I have a Nemathanthus(Gold Fish Plant). I have had it now for a couple of months. it is blooming but also dropping leaves. I am wondering if this is normal or if I need to care for it differently.

Expert Response

The plant looks healthy in the picture so most likely it is dropping leaves as it adjusts to a new growing environment (since you've only had it for two months). Leaf drop typically stops once the plant adjusts; if basic growing requirements are met. These plants need very bright, but somewhat filtered light. Keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering. Let the soil just begin to dry, then water until water runs out of the drainage holes. Pour off excess water from the catch basin. If there are not drainage holes in container, overwatering and root rot is another possible reason for leaf drop. If you did not repot when you purchased the plant, could it be root bound? Might it need repotting? Hope this helps. Thank-you for using eXtension Ask an Expert.
