Hornworm? Hummingbird moth? #272452

Asked August 24, 2015, 12:03 AM EDT

What the heck is this? It doesn't quite look like any picture I could find online. Found on a dirt road at about 8K ft in Evergreen 8/23/15.

Jefferson County Colorado

Expert Response

These are larvae (caterpillars) of Cecropia moth (Hyalaphora cecropia), a large (5 inch wingspan) and showy moth.   Caterpillars are late-season defoliators of many trees and shrubs, but they rarely cause major injury.
