Walnut Tree Health #271667

Asked August 20, 2015, 3:49 PM EDT

I have four mature English Walnut trees and this past Spring one of them didn't leaf out as well. The tips were bare and then the tree completely died. The tree planted next to it is now showing the same symptoms. A few months ago we switched to well water so for the first time the trees are getting watered during summer months about 1/4" every other day.

Is there something I can do to to save these trees?

Expert Response

Many trees this spring showed signs of drought stress from last summer, which was also hot and dry. The poor leaf out of your trees could be related to that and the water that you are applying could be helping to alleviate the symptoms. In general, trees like deeper watering than 1/4 inch. Could you apply 1" of water all at one time or split into two waterings per week?

Also, branch die back symptoms can be the result of root rot fungi http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/GARDEN/FRUIT/DISEASE/pchphytoph.html
Do you notice any decayed bark at the base of the tree?

Also, you might consult with a certified arborist (or several) to see if they can help verify the problem and provide management options.  With large trees, it pays to get on-the-ground clues about the problem.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
