transplanting ferns #271098

Asked August 18, 2015, 12:55 PM EDT

Hello -- my question is about transplanting ferns. A friend has the leafy, lacy, ordinary garden fern; when the leaves have turned brown in late summer, there are brown, round nodules above ground, maybe for the next year. Can I transplant them in the fall?

Thanks for your help.

Expert Response

Yes you can transplant them now.  Make sure you get a good clump of roots and be consistent in watering them until frost even though they seem dormant.  This will help the roots to settle in.  However, before you do this, check to see how invasive these ferns are.  Some of the 'wilder' ferns will take over an area quickly.  If your friend has a lot of ferns, that might be a clue.
