Weed Identification? #268883
Asked August 09, 2015, 7:41 PM EDT
Hi! I struggle with a weed and am hoping you can provide some information / guidance! I've attached two photos. This weed grows to 10-12" tall, puts up a spore-bearing stalk in late winter/early spring, and looks like horsetail but is much smaller.
My questions:
- what is the name of this weed?
- a local farmer told me the trick to control is to stop the spore-bearing stalk - is that true?
- I've sprayed this with a brush-killer (like Crossbow) and it kills the green - does it really kill the plant?
- I often just pull the green off to make the flower bed look good - will this kill the plant over time?
- Would a pre-emergent like Preen work on this?
- Other tips to control/remove this weed?
Thank you!

Expert Response
I urge you to forward these photos to the Multnomah County Master Gardener Hotline that is open daily for questions just such as yours. They have access to both online and hard cover resources as well as access to in house Extension agents specialized in both identification and eradication efforts. In any case it lookslike either horsetail related weed or a version of Scotch Broom, both of which pose difficulties to control. Single plants may be dug out but if spread by rhizomes then control efforts are more complicated. Their number is<personal data hidden>.
