Vining Weed/Best time to prune #268098

Asked August 06, 2015, 1:49 PM EDT

Hi, I have three questions. 1. I have a vining weed (pic attached) that wraps itself around plants, shrubs, and even pops up in the yard. What is it and can I get rid of it? 2. I have two flowering crabapple trees? When is the best time to prune them? 3. I have several large Rose of Sharon shrubs. Some of the boughs are so heavy that they droop to the ground. When is the best time to prune those> Thank you.

Expert Response

There was no picture attached to the message, so I am unable to identify the vining weed.

The best time to prune crabapples is during winter when they are dormant. The same is true of rose of sharon shrubs.

Hello, thank you for the information.

I've attached the photo of the vining weed.

Thanks!

This looks like bindweed (Convulvulus). There is no selective spray to control it without damaging the perennial flowers on which it is climbing. Constant pulling and removal of top growth before it develops more than a couple of leaves can eventually knock it out, but it has an extensive root system, so it readily resprouts when pulled.
