canadian geese eating our clover-lawn #267454
Asked August 04, 2015, 12:30 PM EDT
We live on the edge of Devil's lake next to Lincoln city. We planted erosion control native grasses and plants along the water edge. The lake shoreline group suggested a clover footpathway next to that on a level place near the water. The canadian geese are eating it, much to our grief, and also leaving immense amounts of droppings. what can we do to discourage them? Should we let it die and replant something else ?We have been here less than a year, help!!!!!!!

Canada geese are grazers by nature. In this region we have lots of problems with them flying in to graze on seed-grass fields, but lake banks with ample food will also be very attractive to the birds. I appreciate the need to prevent shoreline erosion and that you're using native grasses and plants. If the clover footpath seems to be the big lure (and they are ignoring the native plantings), then perhaps a woodchip path would eliminate the conflict. However, if the birds are using the whole variety of plants and starting to use your bank to hang out and rest, you probably need to get some further technical advice on-site to advise you and your neighboring landowners with shoreline. First I would consult with the USDA APHIS manager who deals with goose depredation problems: (503) 326-2346 FAX (503) 326-2367
