Life of shaggy bark maple #266137

Asked July 30, 2015, 11:58 AM EDT

How long do shaggy bark maples live? Need to move 3 white oaks from the wye oak tree. When should this be done and how? They are one about 18 feet tall. Can I have someone come out and look at the many trees we have on the lawn and areas that have been replanted?

We are not sure what you mean by a shaggy bark maple.  Sugar maples do have shaggy bark and they can live to be 300 years old.  Silver maples live to about 100 years, red maples to about 130 years.    The best time to move trees is in the early spring before new growth begins.  It can be done in the fall, especially if the winter is mild.  Trees that are 18 feet tall should not be moved, unless you have a professional with the appropriate equipment.  Even so, it is not really a good idea.  https://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG202_Planting_Prob...  We do not make site visits.  You can send photos and ask questions by email and look at all the tree information that we have online.  https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/resource-library/links#trees
