what type of plants attract butterflies?

Sussex County Delaware

Expert Response

There are a number of plants that can be used to attract butterflies.  Many times the type of plant will vary according to species of butterfly in question.  Many perennials found at local garden centers have flowers that adult butterflies will visit.  There are numerous books and flyers or online presentations, websites and fact sheets discussing different plants best used in butterfly gardens.  Example plants include, monarda, goldenrod, and sweet pepperbush.  Also, the garden should provide food for the caterpillars (immature stage of the adult butterfly), sun, water, and a diversity of plants (not all the same).
Hope this helps,

Brian
