Your mystery tree is an Empress tree, Paulownia tomentosa. It turns up in gardens and landscapes as a chance seedling.  Overall, it eventually becomes a very large tree, so big that it was a wise choice to remove it. The rather brittle branches often break in wind storms. If the root system is still in the ground, consider removing it before it re-sprouts and/or becomes larger than it already is.
