Pruning peach trees #263358

Asked July 20, 2015, 11:52 AM EDT

I planted two peach trees last spring. I have not pruned them. I am attaching photos of them. Please point out where to prune. Can I do it now or wait for cooler weather?

Expert Response

Peach tree are mainly pruned to:

  • Produce strong branches that can hold a load of peaches without breaking
  • Keep the tree short enough to easily pick the fruit
  • Open the canopy for good light and air circulation
  • Grow new branches yearly to flower and grow fruit
The trees in your pictures need to be pruned severely to start the branching down low. Please read the document and see the pictures on websites below.
