What is causing brown spots on my barberry? #262942
Asked July 18, 2015, 2:32 PM EDT
There are these brown spots all over the leaves, but only on the red boxwood, not yellow or green. Some small leaves are gone (eaten off?) and branches are just naked. I don't see any worms, just an occasional ant looking lost.
Could you advise what it might be, and what to do?

Expert Response
First off - this is actually a barberry, not boxwood. Second - this looks to be like Anthracnose which is a fungal disease which occurs in wet weather and with all the rain we've had in Illinois, we've been having a lot of foliar diseases. Clean up fallen leaves and if the problem becomes worse, take a sample into your local Extension office for further diagnostics.
