Sick tree balls on wilted leafs #262669

Asked July 17, 2015, 11:52 AM EDT

Hi,

I recently moved into a house in Irving, TX and my gorgeous 40'-50' tree is sick.  I don't know what type of tree it is, but I attached a photo of the tree and the sick leaves.  There are little balls on the leaves, and the those still on the tree are green but have the balls and are wilted.

Does anyone know what type of tree this is and what is causing it?

Thanks in advance and Gig 'em!

Expert Response

Hi Anthony,

We'd need a closeup of green leaves and bark to verify, but this could be an American elm (or hackberry?). Are the leaves serrated? The white spots are galls, which are relatively benign and treatment not recommended; more info here: http://citybugs.tamu.edu/2014/04/03/gall-insects-most-active-in-the-spring/

As far as the tree looking sick, wilting, or having lower leaf loss, if it is in fact an elm, these are susceptible to dutch elm disease.

May be a good idea to have a certified arborist evaluate further. Here's a few referrals:
