Sycamore tree shedding bark #261571

Asked July 13, 2015, 3:33 PM EDT

Sycamore tree approx. 50' tall, est. 2' diameter B.H. is sloughing off bark like mad, it seems, this year. Could this be due to the excessive rainfall in recent weeks (Here in Olney, we had 9.75" in June 2015, over 2X the "normal" amount of precipitation) or some other cause? The enclosed photos show the tree in situ as well as the bark detritus. There is no apparent indication of excessive insect infestation or other wildlife activity. We've lived in our present location since 1996, and the tree was a "young adult" then, just to give you some idea of the tree's age. We'd be grateful for your prognosis and thoughts about our tree. Many thanks for any information you can supply.

Expert Response

Your sycamore tree is not suffering from any malady.  The excess rain may have resulted in a larger than usual growth in the cambium layer which is immediately under the bark.  It is quite normal for sycamore trees to shed their bark, but, this may be an unusual year.  In any case, the tree should be fine.
