I have a yellow lady`s s... #261326

I have a yellow lady`s slipper (from a salvaged group of plants that I bought at the Farmer`s mkt in St Paul) I have had it for about 5 yrs and it has always bloomed. It has multiplied but it has not bloomed this year on any of it`s shoots. They all look healthy. They are in the shade of a big silver maple and I do leave lots of plant material to compost in their area. I also have Jack in the pulpits and they are doing fine. What can I do to make them bloom next year-they are the highlight of my garden. Joan Rodman

Expert Response

The most likely causes are too much shade or too much fertilizer. They like light shade, so they should get some sun, even if it is through tree branches. They need very little added fertilizer. Too much gives you nice green growth at the expense of flowers. Remember they are used to blooming without our "help". A small amount (1/4 of what the label recommends) in the spring and again at the end of June or after blooming should be enough. Don't fertilize after mid-July. They also need to be moist, but not wet, until at least mid-summer. Too much water will drown them.

It sounds like you are doing something right to have the plant flourishing. Good luck with blooms next year.

I   only use composted chicken manure in my vegies and composted leaves from my yard on some areas when it is ready. I never use anything on my other gardens-they are on their own.  I think that area gets some sun until about 2 pm.  Maybe I can try some next year-I do use Osmocote on my shrub roses in the
Spring only.  Thanks for the help, Joan Rodman
