What is this bright green bug, and is it dangerous to my yard? #260015
Asked July 07, 2015, 5:36 PM EDT
This bug showed up in my house today. We have lost several trees including two ash trees in recent years and suspect ash borer beetles were partly responsible.
Not sure what this is, but it seemed to fit the description. Please advise on what this is and what you suggest should it be dangerous to our yard.

Expert Response
Your insect is the Green June Beetle. While impressive in size, they are not nearly as damaging as are some of the smaller scarab beetles. Their grubs are larger also, and although the grubs generally occur in lawns, they do not feed on grass roots, they feed on organic matter. The adults can be serious pests in vineyards, but they do little noticeable damage in home landscapes. They are clumsy fliers and can be quite amusing in their behavior. No treatment is necessary.
