My three year old spirea ... #259509
Asked July 06, 2015, 10:56 AM EDT
My three year old spirea bush consistently grows leggy branches rather than being more compact. It is otherwise healthy. I suspect it may not be getting enough sun, although I'm unsure. Any suggestions?

Expert Response
Depending on the type of spirea, they need full sun to partial shade to look good. If it is in a shady area you may want to find another location for it. Another issue could be too much or too little fertilizer. Most people use too much, which causes weak, leggy growth.
If you do decide to move your plant, wait until early next spring or later this fall to do so. They are normally pretty tough plants that require little care. Some can spread a bit more than we want.
