While visiting Pine Knoll Shores, NC, last week, I saw a tree in the woods with remarkably beautiful, multi-colored exfoliating bark. I'm from New England, and I've never seen this tree at home. The tree had leaves that looked like holly leaves. There were examples of the tree deeper in the woods that received less sunlight, and although they looked like they were as mature as the tree on the edge of the woods, they didn't have nearly as much red in their bark. I've attached photos of the tree, a closeup of its bark, and a look at the leaves against my hand. Two questions: (1) what is this tree, and (2) would it grow in Rhode Island? Thanks!

Expert Response
Hello,
The tree is a native holly with a red lichen growing on the bark. I found several references and photos to the striking patterns appearing in NC.
The lichen is one I have never seen up here, so I doubt it will grow in RI.

Carol Quish
