apparent insect damage on fig leaves and developing fruit #257273

For the past few weeks I have been seeing damage on some of my fig trees. It appears as a very small speck (around 1 mm in diameter) of white powder on the surface of leaves or developing fruit. Once the initial damage occurs it causes a brown discoloration on the fruit. I cut open a fig and it appears the damage is superficial i.e. there are no insects that have burrowed into the fruit itself. So far I have not observed an insect in the act of causing the damage. Do you have an idea what this might be or how it could be treated?

Expert Response
We cannot say what is causing the white spots on your figs. There are all sorts of insects that could be biting the figs and the white stuff is latex fig ooze. We suggest that you take a sample to a Master Gardener clinic and if they do not know what it is then your sample could be taken to the extension specialist in Montgomery County.
