Willow dropping leaves in June #256221

Asked June 22, 2015, 6:03 PM EDT

My willow tree is dropping its leaves. Is this due to last November's frost? Is it dying, or will it readjust?

Expert Response

Hello,

Are all of the leaves on your willow dropping or just a few? What percent of leaves have fallen? Are they turning yellow prior to falling or being shed while green?

It could be related to the November freeze...but also to the Mother's Day freeze. I think some trees have overcompensated and pushed out new leaf growth and are now shedding what they don't need to sustain their health. But that's only a theory.

They are dropping while green, roughly 25% and still dropping.  All willows around me are doing this.

Are you able to send me photos? My email is: <personal data hidden>

Also look at the bark to see if you notice any orange color. Willows were hit really hard with the freeze and many didn't make it. The ones that did are likely stressed....

Are you watering the tree now that we're getting into hot weather? All the moisture we've received was so beneficial, but with temperatures in the 90s, trees will benefit from water (either from the lawn sprinklers or from a hose-end sprinkler) twice a month during the growing season.
