Salamanders #256125

Asked June 22, 2015, 2:05 PM EDT

We have these pests around our back step and garage each summer. We would like to know how to get rid of them. They seem to have a nest in our yard.

Expert Response

These are skinks and they are VERY beneficial.  They eat insects.  Most people would be quite glad to have them.  You could try catching them and transporting them, but we suggest that you leave them alone. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/lizards
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/streams/pdfs/MDLizards.pdf  If you had no insects, you probably would have no skinks, but we do not suggest general spraying for insects, since this generally causes more problems than it solves, causing insect pest population rebounds.  Anything that would be guaranteed to get rid of skinks would be a disaster for your yard.
