Caterpillar #255723

Asked June 20, 2015, 4:31 PM EDT

This caterpillar is on one of our knockout rose bushes. It looks to me like a Question Mark caterpillar (Polygonia interrogationis). Is it? The rose bush is situated not far butterfly weed and a butterfly bush.

Expert Response

What a good looking and unusual caterpillar!
We searched for a while, and think this may be the Buck Moth caterpillar. We haven't seen them much here. They turn into a beautiful black and white moth.
You should allow it to pupate.
Don't handle it as those spines can hurt.
