Why are there yellow spots on the leaves of my apple tree? #254038

Asked June 14, 2015, 7:16 PM EDT

I have an apple tree relatively three years old. For quite sometime now, I have been noticing some yellow spots on the leaves as shown in the pictures. Could you help me identify this disease? How do I treat it?

This looks like cedar apple rust, which is common on unsprayed apple trees. It's fungus and in order to prevent it, you would have to spray multiple times with a fungicide BEFORE it's infected.  Most home gardeners tolerate some rust and look to getting whatever fruit they can from the trees. Choosing resistant varieties is an important aspect to success.

I used Bonide tree spray. I sprayed the tree before bloom, after bloom and recently. What fungicide spray/brands would you recommend?  Thanks.

Here is a link to the NC Extension's bulletin on Disease and Insect Managment in the Home Orchard.  It lists possible treatments you can apply and when.
