annual bluegrass #254036

Asked June 14, 2015, 7:14 PM EDT

Problem with annual bluegrass in spring. How do you get rid of this? See it in early spring and have mentioned to our lawn fertilizer guy but didn't seem to know how to get rid of. He suggested another application of pre-emergent. It seems to be getting worse this year and really don't know if another application of pre-emergent will do it. Any suggestions.

Expert Response

This can be one of the most challenging weeds to control in a lawn. It is a winter annual meaning that in germinates in late summer. Pre- emergent herbicides used for crabgrass control will prevent seed germination when applied in mid August followed by a second application 60 days later. Being an annual , it will usually die off during the summer heat when conditions get dry.
