Pomegranate, Loquat and Avocado pests/disease ID and solution? #253944

Asked June 14, 2015, 11:04 AM EDT

Hello. I live in North Florida, zone 9a and I'm seeing some problems with a few of my fruit trees. I have a Pomegranate "Wonderful" showing signs of yellowing, a Loquat with some leaves looking dry with holes all through them and a potted Avocado with some leaf discoloring. I've taken some photos with the hope that you could help me identify the culprits and suggest a solution. Thank you so much for your time and thoughts.

Expert Response

Yellowing leaves on pomegranate might indicate that they're getting too wet, but the spots suggest leaf blotch - a copper fungicide is recommended for leaf blotch. The loquat leaves look like pests have been munching on them - caterpillars or perhaps Japanese beetles. The safest control is hand-picking the pests off, or try Neem oil as a last resort. As for the avocado plant, we asked Dr. Jonathan Crane, Tropical Fruit Crop Specialist at the UF/IFAS Tropical Research and Education Center and he thought it "may be cold damage from earlier this year or the plant was in the shade and now exposed to high sunlight and we are seeing high light/heat damage."
