Plant Identification #253324

Asked June 11, 2015, 2:26 PM EDT

This plant seems to resemble a nettle superficially but doesn't irritate the skin. It is found in the under story of woodland areas where is receives little direct sunlight.

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.  This is white snakeroot, Eupatorium rugosum. This perennial native plant produces white flowers and is found in woodlands and pastures. The foliage doesn't cause a rash, but is poisonous if eaten.  Cows who ingest the plant will have the toxin in their milk.  This is how Abraham Lincoln's mother died.  Enjoy it where you find it but it wouldn't be a good plant to include in your garden.
