A friend of mine in Peru is growing this plant; he believes it is native to Morocco. Its not a Maryland question per se, but you all have always been very helpful in identifying plants.
This one is a bush type plant with red fruits. He said it was edible, I tried it and it has a sweet, slightly minty taste...a little bit strange. The fruit contains a soft pulp with a milky juice.

It has been suggested that your friend may have a natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa). You can compare it to the description and photos here:

Please note that close cousins to this plant are poisonous. Your friend should get a positive identification before attempting to eat the fruit.

Thanks for contacting us. Can you provide the size of the shrub as well as the fruit? It is difficult to assess from the photo. Another photo of the fruit might be helpful. Also, in what kind of climate and growing conditions is the shrub?

Amazing! Sounds pretty spot on, its growing in a coastal desert climate. It has thorns; im hopeful and grateful it is not a poisonous relative. All the same, I told him to be careful. I dont have more pictures, ive since left.
The thorns are also indicative of natal plum. Interesting find!
