Problems with Oklahoma Redbud trees #252439

Asked June 08, 2015, 7:43 PM EDT

I have three Oklahoma redbud trees that have sparse foliage and serious splits in the tree trunks. The trees are about 8 years old, are in full sun with no other nearby trees or shrubs. These problems have been evident for 3 to 4 years and each years is worse than the previous year. To my untrained eye no disease or pests are evident. Can you identify the problem and recommend a solution?

Expert Response

This looks like it could be Botryosphaeria Canker on your redbuds.

Redbuds have thin bark that splits easily with extreme temperatures and wind, which makes it easy for the fungus to infect the tree.  The disease disrupts the flow of nutrients to the tree branches, which is why the leaves are sparse and unhealthy looking. This article offers some suggestions for management, but your trees may be beyond help at this time.http://bygl.osu.edu/content/botryosphaeria-canker-redbud-0

I also have a tiger maple that has peeling bark at the base of the trunk and the leaves have curled. There is a scare on one of the branches. I fear it may have the same disease as the red buds. Can you confirm that by the attached pictures?

No, I can't tell. Your situation with the trees is complicated...I suggest that you find a CERTIFIED ARBORIST in your area--not the guy that everyone has cutting trees for them.  You need a specialist.  Go here to search--use the zip code option.  http://www.isa-arbor.com/findanarborist/findanarborist.aspx
