Is This a Black Currant? #249608

H! The local park here has a bunch of plants that I suspect are black currant bushes but want to make a positive ID as I don't know if there are poisonous plants out there that look like them. They look like currants to me, and in the summer when the plants are covered in these berries and theyare ripe, they are black and glossy. In addition, the leaves are very fragrant....maybe odoriferous is a better word. They smell. A lot!
Are these plants black currants?

Expert Response
The pictures and description of the odor are consistent with a currant. 'Jostaberry' is a common cultivar that the pictures resemble.
For harvesting plants in a park, you might want to wash the berries before consuming them.

Thank you Weston. I was actually more interested in the leaves for tea making, but I'll wash everything.
thanks again.
