Do bull snakes lay purple eggs? #246902

Asked May 24, 2015, 11:52 PM EDT

We have seen three to four bull snakes in our yard recently. We live on about 2 acres in Douglas County. We have been clearing brush in the yard and yesterday my husband asked me what I thought a purple round thing was in the brush. I thought he was teasing me and that it was a purple rock from our landscaping. I picked it up and squeezed it. The outer soft "shell" tore open revealing a white golf ball-sized sphere coated in clear slime.  Yuck! We have searched online for purple eggs and have been unable to determine what this might be. Can you help?

Expert Response

Bull snakes lay a cluster of eggs in a nest, usually underground. They are white. So, your purple egg isn't a bull snake. It might be from a chicken or other bird. Purple eggs are very seldom if ever fertile. That may account for the sphere inside and the slime outside.

Is it possible an egg from an Easter egg hunt was not found? If it had been outside for a while, it might have the same consistency.

Robins' and starlings' eggs can be purple, though they are a little larger than a quarter.
