Black Stripe on apple tree and bark peeling #246660

Asked May 23, 2015, 3:53 PM EDT

I'm in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and my Lodi apple tree has recently developed a black stripe that starts at the base of the trunk and is now on all the branches. It almost looks smokey. There are a few spots where the bark is starting to peel away as well. I have another tree a few feet away that does not seem to be affected. What could this be and how do I treat it? The apple tree has provided fruit for the last five years and it has already blossomed without issue. It was heavily pruned in December when the tree would have been dormant.

Expert Response

Looks like a fungus called black canker, hard to tell by picture, really no treatment. Bark is more then likely peeling because of the decay taking place.
