25 year old Austrian Pine #246633

Asked May 23, 2015, 1:20 PM EDT

Ken Caryl Valley.  We have a 25 year old, about 45 high, Austrian pine and the top spire has turned brown.  We noticed it last fall.  It appears now to be spreading down to the small branch below.  We can't get up to see it.  We did have a hard freeze last winter, but the tip was brown before that.  Our neighbor has the same problem, but other pines in neighboring yards do not.   There are new candles on lower branches.
One side of the bottom few branches has alot of dead needles.  We do water the tree in dry winters.
Any help would be appreciated.  We don't want to lose this beautiful tree.

Expert Response

I suggest you contact an arborist to take a closer look at the tree. The tip dieback could be from many causes including drought injury, root injury, herbicide injury, a tip moth insect.
The dead needles could be from the November freeze or normal leaf loss (if interior only). The following web site is of the International Society of Arboriculture, Rocky Mountain Chapter.  If you click on the Resources tab, there will be a drop down box to help you find a certified arborist.
