Tomato leaf curl #246479

Asked May 22, 2015, 3:11 PM EDT

I have 2 Early Girl tomatoes which were started from seed. One looks okay, but the other has curled upper leaves. It is still setting tomatoes and the side shoots look like they are coming out normally. I am including a picture. What is wrong with this plant?

Expert Response

That one tomato looks like it has been exposed to a growth regulator herbicide such as clopyralid or 2,4-D. Perhaps an herbicide was sprayed nearby and it drifted onto the tomato plant. Or maybe compost was applied to the garden that was contaminated with these herbicides, a surprisingly common occurrence. You can read more about that possibility at the following link.
